Google to allow users to manage their own personal data

5 11 2009

It has been reported that Google will offer users new privacy controls in a ‘dashboard’ format, in order to let them see what data has been gathered about them.

This may not go very far, however. According to the press release:

“That includes summaries of an individual’s e-mail, search requests and viewing habits on Google’s video site, YouTube. Before, a user would have to check multiple places for all that.

The snapshot doesn’t include any activity that occurs when a person isn’t logged into a Google service.”

It is a step in the right direction, but is it more than a PR move by Google?
